Journey
Thandeka Nompumelelo Mkhwanazi, professionally known as TDK Macassette, aka "Gqom Barbie," is a South African singer, songwriter, dancer, and media personality. Born on 22 September 1992 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, she discovered her love for performance at a young age, participating in school productions and local community events. Her early exposure to music and dance laid the foundation for a versatile career that spans radio, television, and contemporary music.
TDK began her media journey at just 14 years old, hosting youth programs on Ukhozi FM and honing her stage presence. She later pursued dance professionally, touring with renowned South African artists such as HHP, which gave her firsthand experience in live performance and choreography. Her academic background in Communications Management from the Durban University of Technology strengthened her understanding of media and branding, which she applies to her artistic ventures.
Her breakthrough as a recording artist came in 2018, when she signed with Universal Music South Africa and released her debut single, “Domoroza”. TDK quickly gained recognition for her unique style, blending Gqom, Amapiano, and electronic influences. She has collaborated with artists such as Okmalumkoolkat, DJ Maphorisa, and emerging producers, contributing to tracks like “Zama” and EPs including "iGhost Engalali." Her 2025 single “Sorry Makhe” reflects her continued innovation as an independent artist, now working with global distributor Empire.
Beyond music, TDK is also an entrepreneur, founder of Tdeeiosion, and an advocate for creative independence and cultural representation in African music.
